“I don’t get it,” Hudson said, popping a few pieces of popcorn into his mouth. He’d been asking questions ever since she started playing the DVD of Pillow Talk. Thanks to devouring each morsel prepared by the award-winning chef a couple of hours earlier, they’d skipped dinner and gone straight for the salty and butter-coated snack.

Callie rolled her eyes. “What’s there to get? Back then they shared a phone line with strangers.” Something she couldn’t fathom in this day and age. People freaked out when they didn’t have a strong signal. Anarchy would ensue if they couldn’t call someone or have someone call them when they wanted to.

“I mean, she’s a total babe,” Hudson teased. “If you haven’t noticed, I have a thing for blondes.” She had noticed, because despite Gina’s beauty, he never gave her a second glance or looked at her with desire in his eyes the way he did when he was with her. “He’s not very nice. He lied to her and he’s a total player. Then she trashed his apartment. How is this a romance?”

“Technically, she decorated it. And he might have been a player, but not after he met her. And he’s so dreamy,” Callie breathed. The couch cushion shifted, and when she looked to her right, an incredulous Hudson was gaping at her. She waved her hand back and forth before reaching in the bowl for a few buttery kernels. “Fine, he’s not the best in the beginning to her. But she fought him too. They’re complete opposites.”

Hudson stared at her as though she’d grown three heads. His odd expression caught her so off guard that she was happy she’d swallowed her snack, because a snort-laugh ripped out of her.

“What in the world was that sound? And what’s so funny?” Again, three heads.

A case of the church giggles attacked her. They were the ones that hit you at the worst possible times. Like when you’re sitting in a pew next to your nana, listening to the priest recite the sermon, and your brother picks that exact time to tell you a joke. Callie could remember the back of the wooden bench pressing up against each bump in her spine as she tried to hold it in. The way her grandmother tapped her with her elbow, which only spurred her on more.

Callie wiped the tears of laughter that formed beneath her eyes. “Can you imagine if you had to share a phone line with someone? I could only guess the schedule you’d have printed in triplicate and, if I had to guess, laminated. The disorder that would cause in your life would be unheard of. I mean, you lost it when you weren’t given the right coffee.”

“That was your fault.”

A familiar song came on the screen, ceasing her hysteria. “Ooh, ooh!” She pointed at the television. “Shh, this is my favorite part.” For the next several minutes, they watched Doris and Rock realize that they belonged together. Callie sighed as soon as the credits started to roll.
